Lag on a Minecraft server usually means the server cannot finish its work in 50 milliseconds per tick. These fixes help most servers reach a stable 20 TPS.
Server software
- Use Paper or Purpur instead of vanilla or Spigot. They include hundreds of performance fixes.
- Keep the version up to date – every release brings optimisations.
World settings
- Lower view-distance to 8 and simulation-distance to 6 in server.properties.
- Pre-generate your world with a plugin such as Chunky before players start exploring.
- Set a world border so the map does not grow forever.
Entities and redstone
- Limit mob farms and large item piles; entities are the most common cause of lag.
- Tune entity activation range in the Paper configuration.
- Watch big redstone clocks – one fast clock can cost several TPS.
Find the real cause
- Run a profiler such as Spark (
/spark profiler) to see exactly which plugin or chunk is slow. - Remove plugins you do not use – every plugin costs CPU time.
If your server is still slow after these steps, it may simply need more resources. On KingOps you can upgrade your plan in a few clicks and keep all your files.
